There are certain traits in the behaviour of young children that could indicate that a child has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Traits of autism may include, for instance, that your child:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">does not often look others in the eye, or smile at others.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">does not react when spoken to.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">has little interest in other people.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">is difficult to comfort.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">babbles little, or has trouble getting language going.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">plays with little variety.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">can get extremely angry about small things.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">barely reacts when he or she gets hurt.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">has great difficulty falling or staying asleep.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">has eating problems.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">is very focused on certain topics or details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Below you will find an overview of so-called 'alarm signals' for children aged 0-4 and for children aged 4-6. For older children, no reliable list is freely available online (yet), unfortunately.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Traits of autism in children up to 4 years old<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The overview below lists several traits that may occur in very young children (up to 4 years). These symptoms may point to autism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 64.2587%;\">\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Does not smile at others (from 12 months)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You try to interact with your child and smile at him or her. But your child does not respond. Your child is less focused on others around. Your child is also less inclined to smile back when others smile at him or her. For example, he\/she is barely curious about an adult's input in play, or pays little attention to what other children are doing.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 35.7413%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autismejongekind.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/alarmsignaal-sociale-interesse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"200\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 64.2587%;\">\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Does not make use of words in a functional manner (from 18 months)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your child does not use words (or sounds similar to words) to indicate that he\/she wants something, or to direct attention to something.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 35.7413%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1348\" src=\"http:\/\/www.autismejongekind.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/alarmsignaal-vragen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"200\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 64.2587%;\">\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Does not use two-word sentences (excluding echolalia) (from 24 months)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your child does not use spontaneous two-word sentences to communicate. Such as: 'drive car' or 'have cake'. Repeating what another person says without the intention to communicate (echolalia) is not meant here. Naturally, this symptom can for instance also point to \u2013 besides a risk of autism \u2013 language development issues without autism.<span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 35.7413%;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.autismejongekind.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/alarmsignaal-hulp-vragen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"200\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 64.2587%;\">\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino,serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Any loss of language or social skills (Any age)<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Your child can no longer do things, or do them less well, that he or she could before. For instance when it comes to language or social skills. Examples of this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">your child stops talking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">your child no longer waves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">your child makes little or no eye contact.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though your child did do this before.<\/p>\n<p>It is worrisome if your child can no longer do things, or can only do them less well. At any age. Gildeprint: Enschede<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you recognise one or more of the above traits in your child, it certainly does not have to be a case of autism. But it can be a good reason to further explore whether something is the matter. A good next step is to complete the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autismejongekind.nl\/en\/cosos-esat-questionnaire\/\">CoSoS\/ESAT test<\/a>\u00a0(Early Screening of Autistic Traits).<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:<\/strong> It may be the case that none of the traits apply to your child, but you are still worried. Even then, it can be useful to complete the ESAT questionnaire. In it, other traits of autism are included. For example, that your child:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">is difficult to comfort.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">has sleeping problems.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">has eating problems.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">bites or hits others for no apparent reason.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">constantly clings to you.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">is very anxious about new situations.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a style=\"box-shadow: inset 0px 0px 0px 0px #fce2c1; background: -moz-linear-gradient( center top, #ffc477 5%, #fb9e25 100% ); filter: progid; background-color: #e68639; border-radius: 6px; border: 2px solid #e68639; display: inline-block; color: #ffffff; font-family: arial; font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold; padding: 6px 24px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.autismejongekind.nl\/en\/cosos-esat-questionnaire\/\">Take the CoSoS (ESAT) questionnaire &gt;<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Traits of autism in children aged 4-6 years<\/h2>\n<p><strong>For the age group 4-6 years, there is the Dietz &amp; van Berckelaer's (2013) signal list of autism traits. You can find the list below. This list includes signs that may point to autism in children aged 4-6 years. The signs are grouped into four areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-style: solid; width: 100%;\" border=\"1\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 1627px;\" width=\"539\">\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">1. Social interaction<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has difficulty making eye contact;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">finds it difficult to establish and maintain friendships with peers;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">is not attentive to the feelings of others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 1627px;\" width=\"539\">\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">2. Communication<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">finds it difficult to maintain back-and-forth conversations (also about topics other than purely his\/her own interests);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has difficulty using and understanding humour;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has no understanding of proverbs and sayings;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">does not often support communication by gesturing;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has peculiarities with regard to language: often takes things literally (e.g.: \"get your coat\" and the child grabs the coat without putting it on); old-fashioned language (book language); echolalia (parroting)\/set phrases; talks about himself\/herself in the third person (\"he\/she\").<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 1627px;\" width=\"539\">\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">3. Stereotypies<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has limited areas of interest (e.g. only interested in dinosaurs or computers);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">cannot play imaginatively;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">does not lose himself\/herself in pretend play;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">sticks to rituals (always does things in the same order);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">adheres strongly to rules;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">has difficulty coping with changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 1627px;\" width=\"539\">\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">4. Stimulus processing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">A remarkable stimulus processing applies: he\/she is notably hyper- or hypo- sensitive to certain stimuli.
